WhatsApp Introduces Silence Unknown Callers Feature to Combat Spam and Scams

In response to the growing concerns around spam calls and scams, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has rolled out a new feature to enhance user protection.

WhatsApp now allows users to automatically silence incoming calls from unknown numbers, offering a shield against potential spam, scams, and unwanted contacts.

The messaging service aims to empower its users with increased control and privacy through this latest addition.

To enable the feature, users can navigate to the WhatsApp settings, access the “Privacy” section, select “Calls,” and toggle on the “Silence Unknown Callers” option. Once activated, the feature will mute all incoming calls from unknown numbers, ensuring a quiet and undisturbed experience.

The app will neither provide sound nor visual alerts for silenced calls, effectively filtering out unwanted interruptions.

Despite silencing the calls, WhatsApp retains a record of these instances in the recent calls list. Each silenced call is labelled with a “silenced unknown caller” note, allowing users to refer back to them if they wish to return the call later.

The introduction of this feature follows recent reports highlighting a surge in spam calls, and WhatsApp users being particularly affected.

Approximately a month ago, WhatsApp implemented an enforcement system that leveraged machine learning to reduce spam calls by an impressive claimed rate of 50 per cent. With the new silencing feature, users can further combat any spam calls that might have slipped through the service’s automatic filters.

WhatsApp has not stopped at the silence unknown callers feature alone. The platform has also introduced a” sequestration scan” point to educate druggies about the available sequestration and security options.

Through a step-by-step process, druggies can explore colourful orders, including controlling who can communicate them and enhancing account security with features like two-step verification and biometric authentication.
